Thanksgiving!

Did you know that Thanksgiving is not only celebrated in the US but also in Canada?

¿Sabías que Acción de Gracias, a parte de en Estados Unidos, también se celebra en Canadá?

Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October instead of November. Thanksgiving in both Canada and the US is a holiday which celebrates the harvest of the year. The US holiday is modeled by the harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) and the native american Wapangoag People in Plymouth. However, it is believed to have dated farther back, as decades before this event Spanish settlers and members of the Seloy tribes broke bread together. The Spanish shared salted pork, garbanzo beans and held a mass in Florida 1565.

En Canadá, se celebra en el segundo lunes de octubre, en vez de en noviembre. En ambos países, es una festividad en la cual se celebra la cosecha del año. En Estados Unidos, el modelo a seguir de dicha festividad es el banquete que compartieron los colonos ingleses (peregrinos) y los nativo americanos Wampanoag en Plymouth. Sin embargo, se cree que se ha datado la festividad más tarde de lo que debería ser. Esta creencia se basa en que, décadas antes de este evento, los colonos españoles y los miembros de las tribus Seloy se llevaron bien. Los españoles compartieron cerdo salado, garbanzos y celebraron una misa en Florida en el año 1565.

The holiday is widely celebrated throughout North America however, the history that is taught in North American schools is full of inaccuracies and bias towards the English colonizers. In our Bicultural program we teach the modern significance of the holiday as a day to give thanks, however, it was important to also educate the students on the reality, which was much bloodier than we thought.

Esta fiesta es celebrada a través de Norte América, sin embargo, la historia que enseñan en los colegios norteamericanos está llena de inexactitudes e inclinaciones hacia los colonos ingleses. En nuestro Programa Bicultural, enseñamos el nuevo y moderno significado de esta festividad, como un día para dar las gracias. De todas formas, es importante transmitir a los estudiantes la realidad de esta historia, que es más sangrienta de lo que pensábamos.
